Dr. Fell of Pioneer Vision needed to match furniture he already had—he needed some one-off pieces. We fabricated this custom desk and 48" french cleat-mounted mirror—each featuring brushed stainless steel.
This homeowner's idea merged wood and steel for this unique kitchen rennovation. To make it real, we fabricated and patina'd steel beam covers and created a floating butcher block counter with a steel inlay.
Reclaimed from the ashes of a venue fire—the material we used to build Antone's Nightclub's liquor displays, drink rails, and bar cladding were revived by Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC.
We played a leading role in the making of the custom liquor display, millwork, and trim around the Austin Proper in downtown Austin, Texas. Unique projects like this are tremendous collaborative efforts.
The laminate was chosen to match Pioneer Vision’s existing furniture; the brushed stainless steel inlay helped tie it into other pieces around the office. Made from the best materials, the desk’s core is made of multi-ply baltic birch.
The inlay is genuine stainless steel – not a laminate. The side with the drawer features the same arched stainless inlay. The steel is mortised into the desk to ensure a perfectly in-plane surface that will never rust.
Like the desk’s core, the drawer is made from multi-ply baltic birch. The desk features soft-close undermount drawer slides, a matching arched stainless steel inlay front, and a built-to-last rabbeted drawer construction.
The mirror at Pioneer Vision is an imposing 48” wide and 48” tall. The arched stainless steel top rail and apron ties in with the arches on the desk and elsewhere. The frame was built to withstand the weight of the custom glass panel.
We designed the mirror to lay flat against the wall. To achieve it – while maintaining the customer’s chosen frame profile – we mounted the mirror using a ‘french cleat’. The mirror ‘drops’ into the frame from the top.
The Aberdeen floating counter features an oak butcher block top with a patina’d steel strap accent. We fabricated and welded the counter’s frame to the steel posts and fabricated the butcher block top.
The patina’d steel strap is mortised into the white oak butcher block top. Though the strap is welded to the counter’s frame, the wood top can still be completely removed for cleaning. Our butcher block tops are finger jointed for strength and stability.
We designed, fabricated, and installed the patina’d steel header covers in the Aberdeen house remodel. The header system is made of four individual pieces that fit together like a very large and heavy puzzle.
Each header piece was cut, welded, and patina’d to a beautiful finish. A consistent finishing technique creates a slightly-streaked finish in black patina. Our welds are finished to a crisp edge – like they’re not even there.
The header system is made of four individual pieces that fit together like a very large and heavy puzzle. The seams and joints are designed for a snug fit. The headers are fastened to the wood substrate with ¾” bolts.
The headers are fastened to the wood substrate with ¾” bolts. The bolts, washers, and nuts are patina’d to match the header’s finish. Each bolt passes all the way through the wood substrate that the header covers.
Antone’s nightclub is an iconic venue in the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas, and was home to such greats as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, James Brown, and Muddy Watters. We are proud to have played a role in bringing it back to life.
The main bar’s liquor display is 16 feet long and is made of four pieces. We integrated LED strip lights, which operate from one dimmable switch (built into the stepped base). The top shelf is mounted with patina’d 4-inch angle iron.
We designed and fabricated the venue’s main bar (downstairs) [shown], the private bar (upstairs), and drink rails throughout the venue with material that we recovered from the previous location’s venue fire.
The private bar is on the second floor of Antone’s nightclub. We designed and fabricated this liquor display in the same fashion as the main bar (downstairs). The material for the liquor display and bar’s cladding were also reclaimed.
The LED lights add back/under lighting to liquor bottles and we secured the display to the wall with patina’d 4-inch angle iron. This liquor display is a single piece that is 10-feet long and 5-feet tall.
We integrated LED strip lights into the liquor display (similar to the main bar), used patina’d steel as accents, and fastened the display to the wall with 4-inch angle iron. The lights are protected from spills with protective plastic covers.
This photo should give you some perspective as to the size of the liquor display. The patina’d steel accent protects the leading edge from damage and contributes to the industrial-style of the venue.
We fabricated a total of 11 drink rails that can be found throughout the venue. Each drink rail was fabricated especially for the section of wall (or window!) it was installed on. Like the liquor displays, the drink rails are mounted with patina’d 4-inch angle iron.
Like all material we used at Antone’s nightclub, the drink rails were reclaimed from the ashes of the previous venue’s stage. We created decorative bowtie accents at the seams and patina’d the steel of the rails’ protective edge.
Drink rails are susceptible to heavy use (and abuse!). Consequently, we used patina’d angle iron to protect the edge from normal wear and tear. Blackened epoxy and high-build polyurethane protect the drink rails for a long life.
The bar at the Austin Proper Hotel in Austin, Texas is made from shou sugi ban by Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC. Our partnership in this project was in fabricating the furniture and millwork around the hotel.
Intricate details – like the cornice’s dovetail joint or the pillar's scalloped edge – make for a challenging (but rewarding!) project. The mitered crown molding tops off the one-of-a-kind liquor display.
From floor to ceiling, our custom millwork package can be found throughout the Austin Proper Hotel. We manufactured the shou sugi ban for the base trim, panel molding, and shoe molding used in the reception area.
The wall detail — designed by Kelly Wearstall — includes panel molding, trimmed further with ½” square shoe molding. A unique feature of this project was in finishing multiple faces of material with shou sugi ban.
