Liquor displays – drink rails – millwork

Reclaimed from the ashes of a venue fire—the material we used to build Antone's Nightclub's liquor displays, drink rails, and bar cladding were revived by Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC

The design elements in this home's kitchen and entryway were milled of alder. We clad the kitchen's header and installed a vertical railing at the stair. We used hidden fasteners to keep the design elements sleek.

Nestled in Shady Hollow, this home is a beautiful example of how coordinated interior finish work can make a space unique and sophisticated. A mix of design elements and millwork are found throughout.

The furniture at the Urban Moto shop were a collaborative effort. A clever use of material created the industrial look they were after and a professional installation makes it work.

Main bar – liquor display and bar cladding

Antone’s nightclub is an iconic venue in the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas, and was home to such greats as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, James Brown, and Muddy Watters. We are proud to have played a role in bringing it back to life.

The main bar’s liquor display is 16 feet long and is made of four pieces. We integrated LED strip lights, which operate from one dimmable switch (built into the stepped base). The top shelf is mounted with patina’d 4-inch angle iron.

We designed and fabricated the venue’s main bar (downstairs) [shown], the private bar (upstairs), and drink rails throughout the venue with material that we recovered from the previous location’s venue fire.

The private bar is on the second floor of Antone’s nightclub. We designed and fabricated this liquor display in the same fashion as the main bar (downstairs). The material for the liquor display and bar’s cladding were also reclaimed.

The LED lights add back/under lighting to liquor bottles and we secured the display to the wall with patina’d 4-inch angle iron. This liquor display is a single piece that is 10-feet long and 5-feet tall.

We integrated LED strip lights into the liquor display (similar to the main bar), used patina’d steel as accents, and fastened the display to the wall with 4-inch angle iron. The lights are protected from spills with protective plastic covers.

This photo should give you some perspective as to the size of the liquor display. The patina’d steel accent protects the leading edge from damage and contributes to the industrial-style of the venue.

Drink rails – the nightclub’s entrance

We fabricated a total of 11 drink rails that can be found throughout the venue. Each drink rail was fabricated especially for the section of wall (or window!) it was installed on. Like the liquor displays, the drink rails are mounted with patina’d 4-inch angle iron.

Like all material we used at Antone’s nightclub, the drink rails were reclaimed from the ashes of the previous venue’s stage. We created decorative bowtie accents at the seams and patina’d the steel of the rails’ protective edge.

Drink rails are susceptible to heavy use (and abuse!). Consequently, we used patina’d angle iron to protect the edge from normal wear and tear. Blackened epoxy and high-build polyurethane protect the drink rails for a long life.

Alder Stair – residential design elements and installation

Stair and rail – vertical newel posts

These homeowners wanted to make a statement in their home’s entry—they certainly did. The newel posts and handrail were milled of alder and installed by Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC. Don't settle for less than excellence.

The nosing of stair treads usually overhangs the riser and the wall to the side, making it necessary to install standoffs so the newel posts are perfectly plumb. In the “alder house” we made custom standoffs to manage the job.

Nothing says “I was screwed in place” like visible fastener heads. To create a seamless presentation, we milled custom wood plugs to fill the holes left by countersinking the newel post’s fasteners.

To match our design elements elsewhere, we clad the header and posts in the kitchen with alder. The substrates were made square with shims so our joinery aligned perfectly. All fasteners are hidden, as with the stairs.

Shady Hollow – residential furniture, design elements, and finish work

Base trim – great room and office

The base trim at the Shady Hollow house was custom milled for height and the true-square profile. Mitered corners abound in this home’s multi-dimensional layout. In addition, the base trim is perfectly in-plane with the door trim.

The trim was finished in place. We filled the fastener holes, caulked against the wall, and painted the trim. Each corner is mitered – inside and out – to create a beautiful presentation, no matter where you look.

The house has both square corners and unconventional angles. The base trim and door trim were installed to fall perfectly in plane with each other. Where they meet, the joints were finessed to create an absolutely seamless joint.

We fabricated a custom steel trim element for the kitchen’s brick tile facade. Made of ½” angle iron, we cut, welded, and patina’d the trim piece. The back of the brick tile is carved out so it lays flat against the wall.

We fabricated the kitchen island and the countertop at the Shady Hollow house. Flawless joinery on the island’s finished end and a professionally painted finish adds extra excellence to the home’s remodeled kitchen.

We fabricated the kitchen island’s top, matching the post’s cladding and mantel elsewhere in the house. The 2” thick butcher block top is finished with food-safe colorant and butcher block oil. It’s strong enough to chop on, but so beautiful that you won’t.

The post in the kitchen is an excellent example of our finish work where several elements converge. The post’s cladding intersects the peninsula cabinets and counter, and is finished to match the island's top.

Before cladding, the post was shimmed and squared to allow for flawless mitered corners, from floor to ceiling. The cladding was distressed to match the floor’s texture and finished in place to match the island’s top and the fireplace mantel.

The Shady Hollow house has a mixture of old and new. The fluted mantel legs, shelf crown, and cornice were painted to match the new color scheme and the mantel was fabricated to match the island top and kitchen post cladding.

Knots and defects in the mantle were filled with blackened epoxy. The mantel itself is hardwood-engineered – it is a ½” thick hardwood skin over a multi-ply baltic birch substrate frame. It is incredibly strong and stable.

Urban moto – commercial furniture and installation

Urban Moto is “Austin’s original and only full-service scooter shop…where scooters are transformed, not just repaired”. Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC partnered with another fabrication shop to transform the store with uniquely-designed industrial furniture pieces and fixtures.

The display shelves were designed to showcase Urban Moto’s inventory with style and strength – from helmets, gloves, and jackets to chains, lubricants, and accessories. We partnered with another shop to fabricate and install each fixture.

We cut, threaded, and assembled each shelf frame and milled each shelf to fit on the uniquely-designed display fixtures. The shelves are fastened to the concrete block walls with screws intended for just this application.

The shelves were made of LVL (laminated veneered lumber), which is essentially very thick plywood that is typically used in structural framing. Our fabrication techniques created the beautiful industrial appearance.

Each display fixture was specifically designed for each location in Urban Moto’s shop. The layout was finalized through a rigorous approval process and each fixture was fabricated and installed to meet the shop’s needs.

High and low, each shelf and display was designed, fabricated, and installed with Urban Moto’s industrial-inspired flair. Here, the gaps between each shelf are placed between the support brackets, demonstrating excellence in design and execution.

Like the shelf in the previous picture, this display shelf required a clever mounting design. Only this time, we needed to keep the floor space below clear for Urban Moto’s display scooters. No matter your needs, count on us to make it happen.

The checkout / service counter was fabricated and installed in partnership with Fusion Custom Furniture and Design, LLC. With a steel top, adjustable feet, and an industrial-inspired design, this counter will last for decades.
